Top 5 Reasons Why You’re Not Losing Weight

If you’re frustrated that you’re not losing weight despite your efforts, you may be hindered by some of the most common hurdles. Here are some factors that may be holding you back from hitting the weight you want to achieve:

1: Consuming Foods with Hidden Calories and Sugars

With so many processed food options to tempt you, it’s easy to intake more hidden calories and sugars than intended. Even foods that are advertised as ‘healthy’ can contain more sugar than you expect. Be wary of sugary beverages such as juice and flavoured water, low-fat yoghurts, certain meal replacement shakes, and protein bars.

It’s important to always check the labels for hidden calories and sugars when buying pre-made foods and snacks.

2: Not Eating Enough Vegetables and Whole Foods in General

The average Australian does not eat the recommended 5 servings of vegetables a day. Vegetables are low-calorie and high in nutrients and fibre- all things that boost weight loss. It can be easy to displace vegetables with other less nutrient-dense foods (especially if you love snacking) try to incorporate vegetables into every meal by making a side salad, steaming some broccoli, or adding some grated carrot to your pasta sauce.

3: Emotional Eating

So you’re two weeks into a new diet and you have a tough day at work. All you can think about is that block of chocolate waiting for you at home, and you can’t help but eat it all when you arrive. Does this sound familiar?

You are not alone in this. Life can get on top of us sometimes, and comfort eating is a very common coping method. Whether it’s a late-night snack or a sugar craving, emotional eating can easily steer you off track. To combat this, always have light, healthy snacks at hand, such as carrot sticks and hummus, mixed nuts, and fresh fruit.

4: Not Moving Enough

You don’t need to commit to the gym to make a change – so much as getting up 30 minutes earlier and taking a walk can leave you feeling calmer, happier, and more motivated to go about your day. Take the stairs, or park a few blocks away from work and walk. This will not only help your weight loss journey but leave you feeling happier and healthier overall.

5: Lack of Quality Sleep

If you are not getting enough shut-eye each night it could be hindering your weight-loss journey. Lack of sleep is a known risk factor for obesity and plays an important role in your mental and physical wellbeing. Don’t go to bed on a full stomach, give yourself time to wind down before bed (preferably without a screen) play some gentle music, read a book, do some deep breathing or have a warm bath before climbing into bed to give yourself the best chance of a good nights rest
